Huixoc Photos



- Clara Luz and her family at her graduation for teacher training at the Talita Kumi Institute. Clara Luz travelled 8 hours each way, every week-end to attend a day of training for nine months.


- Student Gloria Morales with her family and friends on the road to her village, Naranjal. She will walk an hour along this road and half an hour through the jungle to and from school each day.

- Buying and transporting a whiteboard for the classroom took a whole day. From Huehuetenango, the board was tied to the roof of a taxi for the ride from the market to the bus station, then loaded on the roof of a bus for the trip up the Salegua River Canyon and then was tied to the side of a pickup truck for the ride up the mountain.

- This is our wash area outside the kitchen. Water was carried in large jugs from the town well.


- A village weaver with a traditional backstrap loom. This is one of the traditional patterns worn by the women of Huixoc, identifying them as members of this community.


- The village of Huixoc is nestled high in a mountainous area near the Mexican border, surrounded by coffee plantations.


- We carried these five laptop computers for the school in Huixoc. It took a little time to sort out the instructions for installing the security cables. Security for the computers was a significant concern for the community.
